Why women leave tech: It’s the culture, not because ‘math is hard’

Everything that I have found in my research, and everything that I see in my personal experience agrees with the finding below.  Women like CS (maybe even more than men, on average).  Women leave because of the culture. Do read the whole article — there’s a bunch of data and interesting analyses.

One-hundred-ninety-two women cited discomfort working in environments that felt overtly or implicitly discriminatory as a primary factor in their decision to leave tech. That’s just over a quarter of the women surveyed. Several of them mention discrimination related to their age, race, or sexuality in addition to gender and motherhood.

    The article says they leave for a wide variety of reasons.

    It seems to me that the real issues here are about “rights” — of both employees and employers.

    Indentured servitude used to be legal, and actually persisted in both England and the US until roughly 1917. (It’s also worth peeking at the actual “abolition amendment”, which actually permits both “slavery” and “involuntary servitude” as a “punishment”.)

    There are large areas of vagueness and outright holes in the Constitutional Amendments as to just what rights humans living in the US should have (and the associated legislation is equally problematic).

    Cleaning up the culture of computing would be good. And possibly this could extent to the culture of businesses that use computing. I doubt that much will happen until there are clear declarations of human rights embedded in national law.
