Seeking K-12 teachers for study on learning App Inventor

October 4, 2012 at 6:49 am 2 comments

We’re trying to replicate Lauren’s video study (from ICER 2012) with K-12 teachers, but we’re not getting enough to fill our groups. We now have permission to advertise broadly. If you are a K-12 teacher who might be interested, please do consider helping us! Please do forward this message to any K-12 teachers that you think might be interested in participating.

Are you interested in learning Android App Inventor? If you choose to participate in this research study, you can learn some basics of App Inventor. This research study assesses the effectiveness of different types of instructional materials on learning App Inventor. Participants will be given a task-based lesson in which they will use tools they have been taught during the session. After the instructional period, students will answer questions to test what they have learned. The experiment involves 4 sessions that are about 30 minutes to 2 hours long. If you choose to participate, you will receive one session per week for 4 weeks.

To be eligible you must be at least 18 years old, a K-12 teacher, and you must not have experience with App Inventor. If you are interested in participating in this study, please email l.marg@gatech.edu to get a participant number so your responses online will be anonymous. When you have a participant number, click the link below which will direct you to a survey that will help you make sure your computer is able to run the study and ask you some background questions. The survey will also ask you when you want to participate. You may choose to participate at any time as long as you start the study by December 1st.

Does prior experience with software development other than App Inventor matter?

No, we’ll take those. Our preference is for teachers with minimal experience — we’re trying to replicate the target audience for CS10K.
